Recording software

There's some info here on the software that I use to make recordings and help on playing Ogg Vorbis audio files.

NB. I use 100% Free Software, that's free as in freedom, not just without monetary cost.

What I use.

At the moment I'm using Audacity, running on gNewSense GNU/Linux. I only say "at the moment" since I do keep an eye on other projects such as Jokosher, but I don't have any plans to move away from Audacity any time soon.

What's so great about Audacity? It's simple, and does what I need in a nice straightforward way. It also seems to have masses of plugins, effects and stuff (you know "stuff", very technical that, eh :-)) if you want to do something more advanced.

I tend not to use anything other than the normalise (sorting out the recording levels) and, sometimes, the noise removal effects. I use the effects settings on my Alesis mixing desk (mostly the "room" settings), but Audacity seems to have more reverb type effects than you could wobble a wobble board at.

Audacity is not only pretty much ubiquitous on GNU/Linux (it's usually just a point and click install if it's not already there), but it's also multi-platform. So, those in Windows-land can try some Free Software goodness if you like. Several musicians I know have tried it on Windows and got some good results.
