Making a few things clear.
I use Free Software, in particular the GNU operating system. I use a Free Software GNU/Linux distribution called gNewSense.
... more to follow. The slow project of learning stuff and rebuilding my website continues :-)
My desktop.
After using the KDE desktop environment for many years, and then going rapidly through Gnome and XFCE, I'm now happily using the following (broadly):
- stumpwm (window manager in Common Lisp running in Xorg)
- GNU Emacs
- Conkeror (keyboard driven graphical web browser, though it also will work with a mouse if you really insist)
- Audacity (audio recording and editing)
- Mplayer (video player)
- GNU BASH and loads of the other GNU stuff. Well, it is the operating system.
This takes care of what must be 99% of my time on the computer.
GNU Emacs of course also includes a multitude of things that I use such as:
- erc (irc client)
- rmail (email client)
- emacs-w3m (web browser)
- org-mode (Org-mode is for keeping notes, maintaining ToDo lists, doing project planning, and authoring with a fast and effective plain-text system)
- muse (publishing in various markup styles, including the html on this website)
- identica-mode (watch, post etc on identi.ca)
- jabber-mode (Internet messaging client)
- dired and image-dired (file manager and image viewer)
- eshell (a shell written in emacs lisp)
blosxom-mode (publish from emacs straight into pyblosom
- emms (music on emacs)
and various modes for editing different types of files.
